Biography/Statement

Christopher Clements

He was born in 1986 in San Diego, California, in 2002 while attending high school Chris was first introduced to ceramics. Clay sparked an immediate reaction for Chris with the direct hands on relationship between clay and the potter’s wheel. The connection of the natural earthiness of clay and fluid shapes of the objects people rely on in everyday life became his inspiration. With the opportunity to study under three different ceramic artists Chris quickly developed his own style of unique work. In 2003 with influence from his mentor, Chris began to show his work throughout the United States and in 2004 he was published in a worldwide ceramics publication.

In 2006 with the decision to pursue a BBA at the University of San Diego Chris stopped making pottery for a lack of studio. Over the next four years while attending the University Chris began painting, developing a new and refreshing creative expression. Influenced by early 1960’s pop art movement and silk screening, Chris adapted a style of painting concentrating on familiar images of the modern day pop culture, focused on new found “celebritism” and “fame.” Since graduating with a BBA in 2009 Chris has become a full time artist with both functional pottery and painting continually showing his work.

Chris’s new work is inspired by the curiosity and infatuation amongst the modern public and the relationship they feel and understanding they have, due to fame and mass media of the 21st century. Although sometimes simple lines and shadows people relate to the image they see.
