Glazing Glazing Glazing

For these new pots I have been trying some different and new techniques of glazing as well as some old favorites. I have always stayed pretty consistent but with these I am using multiple techniques and layers of different glazes, different textures, and also application methods. By using different and new processes I will hopefully create some new and unique work, it is always exciting to get back new pieces because you don't know what to expect.

Doing My Part For Empty Bowls

For the last five years Coronado High School has held a fundraiser every April called "Empty Bowls." The fundraiser brings hunger awareness and raises money for CHS. Eric Rempe and his ceramic students make around 800 bowls which people can purchase full of soup during the event. Sponsored by local restaurants and businesses "Empty Bowls" will be held on April 15th at CHS.

Salad Bowl

Shino and Wood Ash

Here are a few pots with RJ Shino and Wood Ash. Shino is a traditional Japanese glaze.

Kilns

Here are some of the different types of kilns used. Each of these kilns create different work because the style of glazes applied and the natural glazes and colors that happen during the actually firing of the kiln.

They usually look dirty and old but when you open them you see something completely different and amazing.

Raku Kiln, Soda Kiln, Traditional Wood Kiln, Three Chamber Wood Kiln, Electric Kilns, and a Gas Kiln.

New Work Fish Pots

I have been learning and using some new glazing techniques. This is a combination of layers of glaze, wax resist, carving, underglaze and wood ash. They take forever and usually turn out horrible because the underglaze bubbles but when it does work right the fish pots are pretty awesome.

Putting Pottery to Use

You can't buy stuff like this in the store... Berry bowls, mugs, garlic and sugar jars!

Counter Full of Work

I usually try to have 10 or more pieces in a Glaze kiln for every firing. The studio is always firing kilns off so its productive to have work at all stages of the process, so I always have pieces to work on in a variety of stages. The funnest part is getting back new work.

iphone Photos

I finally have studio space again. The last few months I have been making a lot of new work in a studio in Coronado. Here are some photos taken from my iphone of some flower pots, mixing bowls, mugs, and colanders.
